Interior painting cost calculator (2026)
Rooms are assumed to be about 12×12 with 8-foot ceilings. Adjust the count for big open-plan spaces (count a large living/dining area as two rooms).
How this estimate is built
Painters price interior walls per square foot of wall, and in 2026 that lands at $2.50–$4.50 per square foot for two coats on walls in decent shape — labor and mid-grade paint included. A typical 12×12 room with 8-foot ceilings has about 380 square feet of paintable wall after you subtract a door and a window, which is why a single room usually quotes at $950–$1,700. Ceilings add $1–$2 per square foot of floor area; trim, doors, and baseboards add $1–$3 per linear foot and often as much labor as the walls because of the cutting-in.
The DIY column prices paint at one gallon per 350 square feet per coat, two coats, at the tier you chose, plus a realistic supplies budget: rollers, a cut-in brush you won't hate, tape, drop cloths, a pole, patching compound, and primer for repairs. Most people underestimate supplies by half and then make three trips to the store.
What moves the price most
Wall condition is the big one. A room that needs skim coating, wallpaper removal, or stain-blocking primer can double the labor, and pros charge accordingly — the "poor" setting here adds roughly $1–$1.50 per square foot. Color changes matter too: going from a dark saturated color to a light one often needs a primer coat or a third finish coat. Ceilings above 9 feet, vaulted spaces, and stairwells add ladder and scaffold time that shows up as 20–40% on those rooms.
Paint quality is the thing people fixate on that matters least to the total. The jump from $30 to $80 a gallon adds maybe $150 to a three-room job, and premium paint genuinely covers better and touches up cleaner. Buy the good paint. Save money on the labor side by doing your own prep and furniture moving — many painters will quote lower if the room is empty and the holes are already filled.
DIY or hire?
Painting is the most DIY-able trade on this site: low risk, cheap to fix mistakes, and the cost gap is almost entirely labor. A three-room job that a pro quotes at $3,000–$5,000 costs $250–$450 in materials to do yourself, over roughly two weekends. If you've never painted, start with a bedroom, not the two-story foyer. Hire when the ceilings are high, the walls are rough, you're on a deadline (selling the house), or you've priced your own weekend and it comes out higher than the quote.
Getting a quote you can compare
Ask for the price per room or per square foot, the number of coats, the specific paint product, and whether prep (patching, sanding, caulking) is included or extra. "We'll see when we get there" on prep is how a $3,000 job becomes $4,500. Three quotes is standard; painting bids vary less than roofing, but a 25% spread is still common.
